2021 Update on National Register Nomination
On June 10, 2021, the NC National Register Advisory Committee unanimously recommended the Zebulon Historic District for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This district includes 318 contributing structures throughout more than 60 acres. The NRAC unanimously disagreed with the objections of the Town of Zebulon and the Wake County Historic Preservation Committee.
Preservation Zebulon graciously thanks our members, donors, corporate sponsors, and granting organizations, whose generous support allows us to continue to preserve Zebulon’s great, historic assets. We do not receive funding or support from the Town of Zebulon.
2020 Update on National Register Nomination
Our National Register Historic District nomination draft has been turned in to the NC State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
The consultant that Preservation Zebulon retained in 2018, Firefly Consulting, has completed the draft nomination. Our next step is to wait to hear back about changes and amendments from SHPO. Thanks to the generosity of many supporters in 2018 and 2019 who enabled Preservation Zebulon to hire Firefly Consulting to prepare the National Register Historic District nomination.
Firefly Preservation worked over 2019 to complete a nomination report of properties which were identified in the Zebulon survey completed in 2018 as a concentrated set of residences and businesses that would qualify as a National Register Historic District.
Identified as structures that will contribute to the district are 308 buildings and eight sites, structures and objects, for a total of 308 contributing items. Also 70 structures are within the district but noncontributing, and nine sites, structures and objects are also noncontributing items.
Firefly Preservation conducted field work in Zebulon over 2019, taking photos and writing descriptions of each property that will be within the district. A “contributing” property is any building or structure which adds to the historical integrity or architectural qualities that make the historic district significant. Owners of contributing properties received a letter in summer 2019.
At some point in 2020 we will send a second letter, inviting property owners of buildings that are contributing to the potential district to attend a public hearing on the National Register application. Please check back for details!
